The Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date 0 Oxygen MB134023 watch features a 38mm case diameter. Compared to the previous 41mm size, this refined adjustment not only preserves the collection's design essence but also better meets the needs of those who prefer watches with smaller diameters https://www.captainthewatch.is.
Montblanc drew inspiration for this timepiece from the Mer de Glace, a renowned glacier in the French Alps. To authentically capture the texture of the glacier's depths, the brand employs an ancient technique known as "gratté-boisé" to hand-craft the "glacial pattern" dial. The dial undergoes a series of meticulous manual processes—including printing, lacquering, and polishing—with a drying period of one full night between each step before the next layer is applied. This repetitive process is essential to achieving such a realistic sense of glacial depth and luster; the technique requires more than 30 distinct steps and takes four times longer to complete than the production of a standard dial.
The Montblanc Iced Sea Automatic Date 0 Oxygen (MB134023) features a unidirectional rotating diving bezel with a two-tone blue anodized aluminum insert. Compared to the abundance of ceramic-bezel dive watches on the market today, anodized aluminum offers a more authentic, vintage "tool watch" aesthetic. The scale for the first 15 minutes is rendered in dark blue, creating a striking contrast with the light blue used for the remaining 45 minutes. To ensure legibility, the hands, hour markers, and the dot marker at the 12 o'clock position on the bezel are coated with white Super-LumiNova®; this emits a blue glow in low-light conditions, perfectly echoing the glacier theme. The dial also features the Glacier collection's signature emblem at the 6 o'clock position.A screw-down crown ensures water resistance to 300 meters, while the sapphire crystal features an anti-reflective coating. Most notably, the "0 Oxygen" designation in the watch's name highlights one of its core technical features: the complete removal of oxygen from the watch case during the movement-casing process. This prevents the crystal from fogging up due to temperature fluctuations and eliminates internal oxidation of the movement—critical advantages for activities such as diving, skiing, or use in high-altitude environments.
The glacier relief engraving on the case back is one of the collection's most distinctive design elements. Moving beyond the "run-of-the-mill" case backs often found on dive watches, Montblanc employs a specialized laser-engraving technique to create a combination of matte and polished finishes, lending the glacier motif a remarkably realistic, three-dimensional quality. The watch is powered by the MB 24.17 automatic movement, featuring central hours, minutes, and seconds, a date display at 3 o'clock, and a 38-hour power reserve.
The watch comes with a blue rubber strap equipped with a quick-change and micro-adjustment system. In fact, I find the rubber strap a better fit for the Glacier collection than the steel bracelet, as it gives the timepiece a more dynamic, energetic feel. The blue rubber also harmonizes perfectly with the glacier-blue dial, while offering a lighter, more comfortable wearing experience—making it far more pleasant to wear than a traditional steel-bracelet dive watch, especially during summer or while traveling.
